Anatomical Sciences
Anatomical Sciences is a core of faculty within the Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine whose research bridges multiple levels of biological inquiry in evolutionary and clinically based anatomical sciences. We possess a broad range of expertise in laboratory-, museum- and field-based investigations of the evolutionary and translational significance of morphological, cellular, biochemical and genetic variation in primates, mammals and other vertebrates. Principal research areas in our group center on: quantitative approaches to neural imaging and cranial integration; allometric, multivariate and geometric morphometric analyses of ontogeny and phylogeny; adaptive significance of musculoskeletal transformations during major evolutionary events; experimental analyses of joint formation, function and aging; neurosciences and neurodegenerative disorders; cellular anatomy, microanatomy and histology; and role of extracellular matrix in development, mechanotransduction and disease.
We offer a PhD degree through several programs including: Integrative Anatomy and General Pathobiology via the Pathobiology Area Program, Interdisciplinary Neuroscience Program, Genetics Area Program, and Medical Pharmacology and Physiology. In addition, we offer a MS in Pathology through the Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences. Graduate students commonly enroll in Human Anatomy and Human Anatomy Lab, with gross and microscopic anatomy typically included. We also teach courses on evolutionary biology, comparative functional anatomy and development as well as specialized seminars in pathology and anatomical sciences. Our courses in anatomy are offered through the School of Medicine and School of Health Professions as well as for undergraduates. We strongly encourage and support postgraduate and undergraduate research via laboratory rotations during the academic year and summer session (e.g., MU EXPRESS, LS UROP, SoM Summer Research Fellowship).
