Anatomic Pathology LabsThe Transfusion Service and Coagulation Laboratory are staffed by the American Red Cross for UMHC and are physically contiguous, facilitating the exchange of coagulation data with the blood bank in the case of patients with massive hemorrhage. The Transfusion Service offers the usual menu of pre-transfusion compatibility testing (type and screen, antibody identification, crossmatch, evaluation of transfusion reactions) as well as providing the ability to do a number of advanced procedures to aid in the identification of difficult antibodies. These advanced procedures include acid elution and a variety of adsorption procedures. Differential (allogeneic) adsorptions in recently transfused patients with warm autoantibodies are sent to a reference laboratory in St. Louis for resolution. The Coagulation Laboratory's test menu includes routine coagulation tests (PT, PTT, Thrombin Time, Fibrinogen, D-Dimer and Fibrin Split Products), as well as mixing studies, factor activity levels (including protein C and S, antithrombin III), testing for lupus anticoagulants and platelet function testing using the PFA-100 method. Screening for Factor V Leiden using activated protein C resistance (APCR) testing is performed in the Coagulation Laboratory, while confirmation by molecular detection of the Factor V Leiden mutation is perfomed in the Molecular Pathology Laboratory (573-882-1305). Other testing for hypercoagulable states is performed either in the Molecular Biology Laboratory (prothrombin gene mutation), the Special Chemistry Laboratory (homcysteine) [573-882-1270] or the ANA Laboratory (anti-beta2 glycoprotein) [573-882-8062].
