Medical ExaminerThe Medical Examiner of Boone County, Callaway County, and Greene County is located on the campus of the University of Missouri. Dr. Carl "Chris" Stacy is the Chief Medical Examiner, and is the Director of Forensic Pathology at the University. The statutes of the State of Missouri mandate that a medical examiner will investigate all deaths that fall within certain categories. For the most part, these are deaths that are sudden or unexpected, without a condition that was expected to result in this type of death. These include all accidental deaths, suicides, and homicides, and those deaths that are sudden, unexpected, or occurring in unusual circumstances or while in custody. The entire statute is available on-line. The Medical Examiner, will conduct an investigation and determine the cause and manner of death. At times, it requires an investigation of the scene and the body, and at other times, it requires an autopsy and detailed forensic investigation. During the initial phases of an investigation, an inquiry may be directed to the Forensic Investigator, who will arrange for an investigation of the scene, and transport of the body (if necessary). The Medical Examiner is available 24-hours a day to law enforcement agencies for emergencies by calling 573-474-2700. Routine inquiries may be made at the same number, but during the hours of 8am-5pm, Monday-Friday. FacultyDr. Carl "Chris" Stacy, Chief Medical Examiner |
