Forensic ServicesThe Medical Examiner's office is located on the first floor of the School of Medicine at the University of Missouri. This is a newly-renovated, state-of-the-art facility, providing premier services serving the needs of over 40 counties throughout the state of Missouri. Three counties have contracted for their medical examiner services with the University of Missouri (Boone, Callaway, Greene), and the remainder have either local coroners or local medical examiners who refer cases to the office. The Medical Examiner's office receives approximately 1,200 calls per year as part of a death investigation. In some of these cases, a scene investigation is conducted, and in some an autopsy if performed as part of the investigation. The death scene investigators and autopsy service technicians are highly-trained personnel who give top priority to every case which comes through the Medical Examiner office. They provide independent, concise and well-documented scientific evidence, along with expert service to the community including law enforcement, coroners, and health care providers. Forensic Services also provides the autopsy service for nearby hospitals. Working with private pathologists and university pathologists, autopsies are conducted at the request of the next-of-kin, often at the physician's request to resolve an unsolved aspect of a patient's clinical course. Some families also request an autopsy, independent of the hospital through the offices of the Forensic Services. The vision for our Forensic Services office is to be one of the best academic medical examiner facilities in the United States. Dr. Stacy assists with community eduction and currently hosts a monthly Forensic Science Interest Group. He is also interested in developing education for the K-12 levels.
