The following new faculty have joined the department. Check out their web sites:

Dr. Casey Holliday is interested in form and function of the head of vertebrates and is teaching anatomy to medical students.

Dr. Ariel Goldschmidt is interested in forensic pathology and is working with the Medical Examiner's office.

Dr. Robert McAfee is interested in human anatomy and is teaching anatomy to medical students and undergraduates.

The Residency Program has transitioned to new leadership, with Dr. Douglas Miller as the Director of the Pathology Residency Program, and Dr. Shellaine Frazier as the new Associate Director of the program. Congratulations, Doug and Shellaine!

It is with great pleasure that we announce Dr. Sharon Stack and Dr. George Davis have been named Margaret Proctor Mulligan Professors.

M. Sharon Stack is vice chair for research in the Department of Pathology and Anatomical Sciences. Her research focuses on tumor progression and metastasis. She uses two- and three-dimensional in vitro models of tumors combined with analysis of tumor tissues and in vivo models to analyze mechanisms of metastasis.

George E. Davis holds a primary appointment in the Department of Medical Pharmacology and Physiology, and a secondary appointment in Pathology and Anatomical Sciences. Davis’ research examines both breast cancer and cardiovascular disease by studying the development of new blood vessels, or angiogenesis. Davis studies how to control tumor cell migration and invasion at the molecular level.

The bequest of Margaret Proctor Mulligan of more than $6 million to the University of Missouri enhances efforts to treat and cure patients with two of the most prevalent diseases, cardiovascular disease and breast cancer, by funding more than 10 endowed faculty research positions. Margaret Proctor Mulligan, a breast cancer survivor and supporter of MU, made the donation to the MU School of Medicine. No other gift has created as many endowed faculty positions at MU.

The PAS Department was well represented at the 2009 Life Sciences Week poster sessions with nearly 20 posters! For a schedule of events, please see: http://bondlsc.missouri.edu/lifesciencesweek/search/index.php.

Awards:

Congratulations to Rachel Menegaz, a first-year PhD candidate in the Integrative Anatomy program and an MU Life Sciences Fellow! Rachel won one of only five prizes at the annual international meetings of the American Association of Physical Anthropologists.  She was awarded the Mildred Trotter Award for best student presentation on skeletal biology and adaptation for her poster entitled Loaded and spaced out: Plasticity and function of the palate in rabbits, with implications for australopith facial form.

Congratulations to Rebecca Burkhalter, first place poster prize for: Burkhalter R, Liu Y, Symowicz J, and Stack MS “Integrin Regulation of β-catenin Signaling in Ovarian Carcinoma”, National Organization for the Professional Advancement of Black Chemists and Chemical Engineers, Midwest Regional Conference, Indianapolis, IN, October 2008.

Work in the laboratories of the department won First, Second, and Third place in the Health Sciences Research Day symposium in the Basic Science (Category I) group, for work in the labs of Drs. C. William Caldwell and Matthew Ravosa.

Dr. Carol Ward received a LSB Leakey Foundation Award to conduct novel 3D analysis of Koobi Fora Hominin anatomy and variation.

Dr. Jessica Weiberg received a Resident Specialty Grant from the American Society of Clinical Pathology
