Personal Statement: I was born and raised in Kansas City, MO.  My father was a pediatric dentist and throughout my childhood he let me participate in many different aspects of his practice.  His passion for patient care and strength in developing strong interpersonal relationships was very inspirational to me.  I have always gravitated toward the physical and biological sciences but have also had a strong interest in the humanities.  I studied both chemistry and anthropology in my undergrad years and decided that medicine was the perfect avenue for me to combine all of these interests.  I have loved every single second of medical school and am enthusiastic for what my future career holds.

Hobbies: Cooking, playing the piano, working out, and participating in and watching sports of all kinds

Why I chose this program: I am currently in between my second and third years of medical training.  I chose to apply for the post-sophomore fellowship after having a very positive research experience in the pathology department the summer before my second year of medical school.  I also thoroughly enjoyed the pathology component of our medical school curriculum and wanted to further my knowledge and acquire hands-on experience in the field.  Pathology is fundamental to the practice of medicine, and it is my goal to use my experiences from this year to become a well-rounded physician in whichever field I ultimately enter.

Professional Interests: Being a student, my professional interests are still quite broad. I have always been interested in women’s health and hope to incorporate this into my future medical specialty of choice.  Recently, I have developed a particular interest in hematopathology and blood banking and am considering a career in hematopathology or hematology and oncology.

Long term plans: I plan on completing medical school in 2012.  I love to teach as well as participate in research, so after residency I would like to work as an academic physician.
