Personal Statement: When I was a kid, I was constantly hurting myself. Little did I know that through acquiring first hand knowledge about emergency rooms and physicians’ offices that I was actually learning about a career and life-style that I would eventually choose as an adult. Although my parents divorced when I was very young, they were both doctors who, each truly loved what they did on a day-to-day basis and I saw that as a kid. My parents placed zero pressure on me to choose a particular course of study in school, instead taking the philosophy that through experience I would eventually find something that suited me. I studied environmental studies in college (which was a self-created major combining philosophy, ecology, anthropology, and earth sciences). It was only during my senior year in college, while volunteering in a Spanish speaking health clinic and also taking biology course work that I decided that I wanted to go to medical school. Five years later I found myself at the University of Missouri and subsequently completed my first two years while loving every minute of it.

Hobbies: Playing with my 9-month-old-daughter, bicycle racing (single speed mountain biking and cyclocross), bluegrass music, cooking, watching movies, and sampling microbrews with my wife.

Why I chose this program: The post-sophomore fellowship is a wonderful opportunity for me for several reasons. First, I really loved reading and studying during the first two years. The practice of pathology places importance on a broad knowledge base and the application of that knowledge to affect patient care. Two, pathology was a field that I had ‘on my differential’ as a career choice but I was worried that I would not feel as though I was directly helping people to get better. The experience of acting essentially as a first year resident has helped me to realize that my intention to help people get better can be manifest through the practice of pathology (in fact, I have found my duties to be very rewarding). Lastly, the professors from the pathology department with whom I had contact during my first two years, truly inspired me with their ability to teach, love for what they do, and amazing knowledge of human health and disease.

Professional Interests: I hope to eventually develop a broad knowledge base (I want to know as much as I can about as much as possible). Areas of academic interest include hematopathology, epigenetics, surgical pathology, and clinical chemistry (particularly lab tests for endocrine neoplasia).

Long term plans: I hope to have a good balance in my life where I can be a good husband, father, physician, and still have fun. Since I hope to be involved in teaching and perhaps research I imagine I’ll be a part of an academic medical center (hopefully one with mountains and good cycling nearby). Since I have not yet been through 3rd year rotations, I can’t say for sure that something else won’t grab me but right now, I am really enjoying pathology.
