Jamie Odem Hometown: Joplin, MO Undergraduate School: University of Tulsa, Tulsa OK Medical School: University of Missouri-Columbia Personal Statement: I grew up in Southwest Missouri and spent most of my primary education in a college preparory school which allowed me to explore different career opportunities, although I was pretty sure I wanted to be a doctor after an endocrinologist visited my 4th grade class. My father, a pathologist himself, was always getting me and my siblings involved in his work, and I found it fascinating. After three years of pre-medical training and a Biology degree at the University of Tulsa, I was accepted to and started my four years of medical school at the University of Missouri-Columbia. I got married six months before medical school started, and as I journeyed through medical school, my husband and I would speculate about my specialty choice. I certainly did not expect to fall in love with pathology as my own field, after having “grown up with it.” But I found myself more and more at home in the lab and behind a microscope, and my husband and I decided that not only was Pathology the right choice for me, but so was the University of Missouri. In my fourth year of medical school, I applied for and was accepted to the program. Hobbies: playing the piano, reading, spending time with my family and friends, shopping Why I chose this program and Professional Interests: My husband and I love Columbia, and I fell in love with this program during my 3rd and 4th years of medical school, with the encouragement of both the residents and faculty who were always eager to answer questions, to teach, and to help me succeed. Furthermore, many of my interests in Pathology are strongly represented in MU’s program, including surgical and cyto pathology, as well as transfusion medicine. Long term plans: I will likely complete a fellowship after residency, and then I hope to join a private practice in the Midwest.
