Personal Statement:
As a kid in rural Missouri, I had a keen interest in science. I would help my dad on the farm nursing animals back to health and hang out in the woods with my brothers tracking wildlife. I seemed to have an innate curiosity for understanding the biology of both animals and humans. In high school and college, I expanded my learning, traveled, and truly had a liberal arts-type experience. I majored in biochemistry and Spanish which took my undergraduate studies to Mexico, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and Europe. Towards the end of my undergraduate experience I realized that my interests had centered on healthcare throughout. I had worked in local hospitals and realized I enjoyed that atmosphere and caring for people. Medical school was such a great experience—although some portions were more difficult than others—I always found the science behind the medicine intriguing. Today I am still fueled by that inner curiosity and for this reason, pathology has been an excellent field for me.

Hobbies:
Traveling, mountain biking, watching Mizzou football & basketball

Why I chose this program:
The Department of Pathology residency program here at University of Missouri is structured so that individuals can pursue their personal interests within the field. Residents are given ample time for self study and direction; however, there are plenty of lectures and real work to be done as well. I think it is a fine balance that residency programs must find—between overwhelming the residents with too much work so they do not have time to get to the deeper learning and providing enough learning material (cases, patients, consultations…) to cover the breadth of what is needed to excel in Pathology. Personally, my learning style is more of a self-learner—I would rather cover fewer cases and have the time to read and review than be flooded with a higher volume but not have the time to learn about the cases and pathology in-depth.

I also have really enjoyed living in Columbia, Missouri. It is a progressive city with a lively and unique populace. There are several universities and colleges in the area with plays, concerts, sporting events, etc. to keep entertained. Not to mention, it’s safe here and the cost of living is about the lowest of anywhere in the U.S. There’s an easy-to-use local recycling, awesome city and state biking trails, and clean, safe parks.

Professional Interests:
Undergraduate medical teaching (possibly graduate teaching in the future), laboratory management, surgical pathology

Long-term plans:
To give back to the learning community that has given so much to me.
